Well...who wants to live forever, right? I wasn't initially going to do this video because I know it will be incredibly controversial. The topics discussed and the subject matter today are things that I know will get people worked up...but I must stand by my principles. I believe that, regardless of subject matter or author, any book or media can and should be discussed and appreciated by anyone willing to research it and understand it properly. If I shrink away from this because of my fear of controversy, then I cannot rightly stand by my principles. Extra Credits is discussing Beloved by Toni Morrison, a book that I read quite a number of years ago. I admit I was not a huge fan of the book when I read it, but I appreciated the literary stylings, the attempts at solid timeless themes of confronting the past and working through it rather than avoiding it, and for the meaningful history it produces. Extra Credits however uses the book as many do to scream 'slavery bad' which.....pretty much no one is disagreeing with them on. And I think that's my ultimate fear with responding to this video. My fear is that by merely accusing EC of covering this book in bad faith and with bad motives, I will be straw manned as 'supporting slavery' or saying 'it's a bad book,' which is not at all what I'm saying. In fact...I think that EC is doing precisely what this book is warning us not to do. Giving more power to past trauma and pain than it needs and not encouraging us to move on from it. But...that's just my take. I do hope ya'll enjoy...though I have a funny feeling this video might kill the channel. But...here we go.
