NPR Weekend Edition Saturday host Scott Simon accepts the National Press Foundation W.M. Kiplinger Award for Distinguished Contributions to Journalism at NPF's annual awards dinner February 23, 2023. Simon's remarks followed an introduction by Knight Kiplinger, Editor Emeritus of Kiplinger Publications, and brief NPR video honoring Simon. Scott Simon's remarks begin at 7:56. NPF’s Kiplinger award judges noted Simon’s lifetime achievements in journalism. The Chicago native has reported from all 50 states and five continents, covered 10 wars and published both nonfiction books and novels. He has won Emmy and Peabody awards and is a special contributor to CBS Sunday Morning. Simon has also mastered the transition to digital media, writing the “Simon Says” blog and acquiring more than a million Twitter followers. The W.M. Kiplinger Distinguished Contributions to Journalism Award was created in 1983 to “honor persons who have, through their vision and leadership, strengthened American journalism and furthered the efforts to establish the highest quality in American journalism.” Last year’s winners were ProPublica founders Paul Steiger and Dick Tofel. Previous winners include columnist George Will, Bob Woodward and Clarence Page.
