ROV KIEL 6000 Livestream at around 942 meters depth in the Bay of Tarrafal, Santo Antão, Cabo Verde, 25.03.2025 The coastal ocean off Cabo Verde consists of more than 90 percent deep sea (waters deeper than 200 meters). It is still largely unexplored, yet known as a hotspot for ocean biodiversity. The international expedition M209, which started on 21 March and led by Dr. Henk-Jan T. Hoving from GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel on research vessel METEOR with participation of scientists from Cabo Verde, maps the seafloor around the Cabo Verdean islands and its underwater mountains, known as seamounts. Furthermore, they observe, collect and study underwater fragile midwater animals and organisms. As gelatinous plankton is almost impossible to catch with nets and bring on board undamaged, the remotely operated vehicle ROV KIEL 600 will be used to capture living deep-sea organisms. Today, the Ocean Science Centre Mindelo (OSCM) will broadcast a unique livestream of an underwater ROV dive from METEOR to an interested public and enables a dialogue with selected scientists. Video material from the deep sea with living organisms in front of the camera will be shown in real time. This is made possible through a coordination with the ROV team, the RV METEOR, GEOMAR and @IMar, who both jointly operate the OSCM.
