Angel Island is a small private island with just 10 cottages, built on environmental principles. Located a 30 minute boat ride from Labuan Bajo, the island is surrounded by protected waters and coral reefs, and has spectacular views of the Komodo archipelago. The resort was opened in 2009 with clear environmental goals in sight. Not a single tree was cut down to build the resort, with ongoing proactive planting of native trees, helping turn the island into a haven for local wildlife. The islands abundant hibiscus gardens are the idyllic setting for the cottages, but also attract a huge variety of butterflies, sunbirds and native honeybees. Many species of birds take advantage of the trees, with kingfishers, woodpeckers and eagles being commonly sighted, including the migratory pacific black duck. Other wildlife that can be found on the island includes the occasional seahorse on the house reef, nesting turtles (at certain times of year), and of course the Angel Island superstar Bertie the water buffalo, who washed up on our shores one day to begin his new life of luxury. One core ethos was to leave as much of the island undisturbed as possible. This can be seen with the desalination plant drawing water from the sea rather than disturbing the natural water table. Grey water from showers and cleaning is sent through reed beds to remove toxins before being allowed to return to the environment. Mooring lines are used to prevent anchors being dropped on delicate coral ecosystems, and you will not find a pier or jetty on Angel Island built on top of reef or disturbing the natural flow. The beaches on the island have been left as natural as possible, with rooms built a short distance back from the beach to preserve the natural beach line. All buildings on the island have been designed by the owners, built by local craftsmen, with materials from sustainable sources. Cottages The rooms at Angel Island are often described as a hidden gem, and one of the many highlights of a stay. Offering true value, the hand crafted cottages nestle amongst verdant gardens, giving an amazing sense of private nature. Constructed from the finest materials, the cottages provide all modern facilities, including air conditioning. Many guests have told us our cottages eclipse the standards offered by surrounding establishments – when asked how they like the rooms, the most common response is ‘wow’!
