DAVID PINTO: I had the pleasure in Morocco to meet a great local musician and hear him play his gimbri. I was fascinated by the instrument and the music. I noticed that some of the rhythms in Moroccan music were similar to Afro-Peruvian rhythms, especially the festejo. Later, at a local market, I purchased a gimbri for myself. It was beautifully rustic, with three gut strings and leather ties for tuning. When I returned to Peru, I was interested in exploring the possibilities of this instrument using my experience as a bassist. Some alterations would allow me to play in different tonalities and expand its range for improvisation. I worked with luthier Antonio Huamani in Lima to make these changes and preserve the beautiful sound of the instrument’s camel-skin covering. A flat neck similar to a bass was constructed, along with four tuners (an additional string was added), and a piezo pickup in the bridge for amplification. The traditional tuning of a gimbri is D and G. With the alterations outlined above, I am able to tune: D, G, A.
