In October last year, during a visit to Kulhudhufushi City, I made a point to visit Tharijehige, a century-old residence that has remarkably preserved its traditional architectural character and original features. The house contains a collection of valuable antique items and artifacts that offer a vivid glimpse into the passage of time and the lifestyle of earlier generations. The only modification made over the past hundred years, as kindly explained by the caretaker, Alibe, was the replacement of the traditional thatched roof with a more durable tin roof. I spent nearly an hour with Alibe, who shared his deep sense of loss regarding the house. The property had been divided among his siblings, and unfortunately, he did not retain ownership of the portion on which Tharijehige stands. As a result, he expressed his disappointment and concern over the possibility of the house being lost to modern development under its new ownership. However, on 9 January 2026, approximately three months after my visit, the Kulhudhufushi City Council made the decision to safeguard and preserve Tharijehige as a heritage property for future generations. The council resolved to assume custody of the house, providing fair and equivalent compensation to its owners.
