Charles Craddock was supposed to spend the summer working at Cedar Point — a job he and his family have been looking forward to for months. But after a Skype interview, orientation and moving into the dorms over the weekend, the 20-year-old Cleveland man was told at his training session that he had to cut his shoulder-length dreadlocks off — or go. "I actually asked her about it because I read over the guidelines," Craddock said about his interview. "So I asked her, 'Will it be a problem with my hair?' and she said, 'No, as long as you keep it pinned up when you're working." That actually turned out not to be the case and Craddock has the termination letters to prove it. About 24 hours after his family moved him into the dorms, made the beds and left, they had to return to Sandusky to pick him up. Part of the park's standards for male workers include specifications that hair can't be longer than your collar, no ponytails or extreme hairstyles, and any twisted hair has to meet the other requirements. So you might be thinking — why not just cut his hair? "It's like losing a part of me," Craddock said, explaining it took about four years to grow his dreadlocks. He wanted to use the savings from the summer to pay for tuition at Cuyahoga Community College, where he's studying auto mechanics. Craddock said he would have made plans to find another summer job if he'd known his hair would be such an issue. His mother Melima said that it's not anger, but more frustration at the fact the process went so far in the first place. "He wants to work. That's his goal," she said. "And they've kind of taken that away from him."
