When Christian missionaries arrived in China, they encountered an ancient, complex, and nuanced culture that presented its own unique opportunities for and challenges to evangelization. China's ancient intellectual and religious traditions are classically divided into what is known as the "Three Teachings (Sanjiao 三教)," or Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism.
