The Live Performance by Harry "Sweets" Edison & Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis at the 1981 Chicago Jazz Festival was part of a series of sets broadcast by WBEZ-FM (NPR) in Chicago during the festival that year. The set was introduced by Billy Taylor, host of NPR's Jazz Alive series, and was the third set of the evening's Jazz Alive broadcast, following Joe Williams. The musicians included Harry "Sweets" Edison on trumpet, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis on tenor sax, Jodie Christian on piano, Eddie Calhoun on bass, and Phil Thomas on drums. Comments from Billy Taylor Harry "Sweets" Edison and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis were both renowned jazz musicians, known for their work as part of Count Basie's band, among other groups. Edison was a trumpeter known for his melodic playing style, while Davis was a saxophonist known for his hard-swinging sound and bluesy solos. The two musicians teamed up to form a quintet in the 1980s, performing and recording together until Edison's death in 1999. Their repertoire included a mix of blues, bebop, and swing standards, and their live performances were known for their high-energy and dynamic interplay between the musicians. Some of their notable recordings include "Sweets & Jaws" (1984), "Sweets & Jaws Quintet - Along Together" (1990), and "Night Hawk" (1998).
