Aliyot | Ascents (2024) Yotam Haber Don-Paul Kahl, saxophone - @donpaulkahl Zachary D. Nyce, piano - @DrNyce-et5yv Recorded Live in Stretansky Hall at Susquehanna University Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania 27 June 2024 https://www.donpaulkahl.com https://www.yotamhaber.com Programme Note (written by Yotam Haber): "In Hebrew, the word Aliyah means ascent or rise-the act of “going up”. For generations this word also means immigration to the land of xxxx. For much of xxx history, having a homeland was aspirational, and for much of our diasporic history, it was a pipe dream. When I was very young, and my family would fly into xxxx, I would see passengers clapping and crying; I would see people literally kiss the tarmac upon leaving the airplane. I didn’t understand the fervor and intensity of coming to that hot, dry place. That tiny, tiny spot that is the cause of so much heartache, of so much hatred, of so much division. My Aliyot are divided into “waves” and “meditations”. There have been five major waves of Aliyah. But my work has nine waves. Nine waves because there have been so many more attempts to ascend, so many more stories. After October 7, I was inspired deeply by Ravel’s words about his Le Tombeau de Couperin, written in memoriam of his friends and family who perished in World War I. Ravel was criticized for writing music that was too light-hearted. In response, he wrote, “the dead are sad enough, in their eternal silence”. I too could not, would not, write funeral marches and dirges. My Aliyot are trying to capture joy, my youth, dance (several movements prominently feature West African rhythms that I heard as a young boy in Nigeria, where my father worked in construction), and popular music (like a dream of the Supernova trance music festival disrupted on October 7). I have tried avoiding having to write a program note for this work. Perhaps it is better to call it “untitled” and have it heard with no context, as “pure” music. I have a strong gut feeling that telling an audience anything about my heartache, my pain, my feelings of hopelessness and fear about what is happening in this horrible year 2024, will probably not help anyone hear this piece any “better”. So I urge you to forget you read this. If you find some joy in this music, I have done my job." This work was commissioned by Chamber Music America and I am grateful for Zach and Don-Paul’s masterful artistry in bringing it to life."
