Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Violin Concerto No. 4 in D Major, K. 218 Fritz Kreisler, violin London Philharmonic Orchestra Sir Malcolm Sargent, conductor Recorded February 11, 1939 – Kingsway Hall, London Originally issued on 12" HMV UK 78 RPM shellac discs This performance captures Fritz Kreisler in the late electrical recording era at the height of his mature artistry. Recorded in Kingsway Hall just months before the outbreak of World War II, it combines Kreisler’s uniquely warm, singing tone with the elegant orchestral support of the London Philharmonic under Sir Malcolm Sargent. This restoration presents the recording with: • Carefully balanced modern loudness while preserving dynamic integrity • Spectral stabilization based on the original harmonic ceiling (~6–7 kHz) • Controlled hall reconstruction to reflect Kingsway Hall’s natural acoustic The goal was not to modernize the performance beyond recognition, but to allow today’s listeners to experience the 1939 sound world with greater clarity, space, and musical proportion. Movement balance has been respectfully preserved to reflect Mozart’s concerto architecture: I. Allegro II. Andante cantabile III. Andante grazioso If you appreciate historically informed restorations that respect both performance practice and recording physics, consider subscribing.
