Carey, MD, ScM is the Richardson and Marilyn Jacobs Preyer Distinguished Professor in Breast Cancer Research in the Department of Medicine at the University of North Carolina (UNC). She graduated from Wellesley College, then received her medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where she remained for her residency in Internal Medicine followed by a fellowship in Medical Oncology and an advanced degree in Clinical Investigations. Dr. Carey joined the UNC faculty and Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center in 1998. She was the Chief of the Division of Hematology and Oncology and Physician-in-Chief of the North Carolina Cancer Hospital from 2012-2020. In 2020, Dr. Carey assumed the role of Deputy Director of Clinical Science at Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and became the inaugural Chief Clinical Research Officer for UNC and UNC Health’s Clinical Research Partners in 2025. Dr. Carey is an active and practicing breast cancer medical oncologist and clinical trialist. She has a longstanding research interest in the clinical application of laboratory findings in breast cancer, with a particular interest in the clinical implications of different molecular subtypes of breast cancer. She designs and leads clinical trials of novel drugs and approaches and is a close collaborator with laboratory investigators and epidemiologists. Dr. Carey has served in many roles for the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), and the National Cancer Institute (NCI). She is a member of the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars, recipient of the NCI Director’s Service Award, and a Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (FASCO). She is co-Chair of the Breast Committee of the NCI-sponsored Alliance national cooperative trials group, co-Chair of the Translational Breast Cancer Research Consortium Executive Committee, and member of the Susan G Komen and Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) Scientific Advisory Boards. About Pre-Health Shadowing: Pre-Health Shadowing was created in response to the ongoing pandemic. Due to COVID-19, many in-person shadowing and clinical opportunities have been annulled. This has disrupted the paths of thousands of pre-health students as these hours are crucial for the academic and professional development needed for a successful health program applicant. Students interested in pursuing a career in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, research, physical therapy, or are just curious are encouraged to attend. Pre-Health Shadowing was built to accommodate the lives of students, giving options to attend the live Zoom or review the video at a later time. Students can receive a certificate verifying their participation in the program. We host various health professionals from different backgrounds to talk about their job, education, extracurricular activities, admissions process, daily tasks, interesting cases, tips, and more.
