The Battle of Verdun (February–December 1916) was one of the longest and deadliest battles of World War I. It was fought between French and German forces near the city of Verdun in northeastern France. Germany aimed to “bleed France white” by attacking a strategically important area that the French would defend at all costs. The battle became a brutal war of attrition, with constant artillery bombardments and heavy casualties on both sides. After about 10 months of fighting, France successfully defended Verdun.
