For example, Diamond Crown, David Marshall, Elie Bleu, Davidoff and so on. The purpose of this video is to explore why you might buy a humidor in the luxury range. The luxury category is perhaps the broadest in scope. High-end desktop humidors fit here, but so do cabinets and electronically climate-controlled units. Further, walk-in humidors sit at the very highest end. For the purposes of this video, however, we are mostly covering high-end traditional wooden humidors. A luxury wood humidor is not going to give you a good value in terms of number of cigars stored. Rather, the appeal comes from, for one, the beauty of their construction and finish. It's also a form of participation in the heritage, tradition and lifestyle of cigar smoking and collecting. Indeed, airtight tupperdoors and plastic coolerdors have superior storage characteristics. However, plastics degrade in a less attractive fashion than finely-crafted wooden humidors, which can be heirloom items that you pass down for generations. For example, Marvin Shanken of Cigar Aficionado has a vintage collection including, among others, a humidor from Winston Churchill's collection. When maintained optimally, a wooden humidor and the cigars within can last a very long time. On his visit to Dunhill in London, Paul examined cigars that were a hundred years old! While subsequent generations may or may not appreciate cigars, an artfully-made luxury humidor may also find use as a chest for other items. Of course, many will find the idea of buying a luxury humidor absurd. This is the same as any luxury item, really. Why buy a Bentley when you can get a Renault, or an Audemars-Piguet when you can get a quartz Casio? If we were concerned with effective storage only, we'd go to an airtight tupperdor or Boveda bag for smaller quantities. Luxury comes into play at a different level of cigar collecting. The main downside of a luxury humidor is the cost, as airtight and non-airtight options fall in the category. Products like the Prestige Imports Reagan for example, can get quite expensive. This 4000-count externally-powered glass cabinet is over $4000 USD. There is also the Remington, a half-size version of the Reagan, which holds 2000 sticks. In general, luxury humidors are a more conversational topic, due to the more subjective nature of buying at this price range. If you're a man of means, especially one getting deeper into the cigar collecting lifestyle, you might upgrade your storage by introducing some luxury pieces.
