American Adventure (both the attraction and the pavilion) was a Day 1 attraction at Epcot, opening on October 1, 1982. The pavilion was built to be the weenie of World Showcase, at the South end of Epcot. The attraction within (of the same name) is a fully animatronic stage show, backed by a series of extreme widescreen movies. It is hosted by two of my favorite Americans, Ben Franklin and Sam Clemens. Though it's impossible to squeeze 200 years of history into a half-hour, they do try to hit the high points, though those high points are more popular ideals (in 1980), than many other meaningful events in American History. Like The Great Movie Ride, the final movie has been updated a couple of times to try to stay more relevant, and not look like it's stuck in the 1980's. (Which it is, but it gets away with it because the animatronic cast is of generations ago.) It's the only true animatronic stage show at Disney World. Unlike Carousel of Progress, which moves the audience to another stage/set, The American Adventure is presented as a traditional stage show, in a nice comfortable, air-conditioned theater... The sets live on an immense piece of machinery called the "trundle" (I think), which moves back and forth under the audience and elevates the "sets" as needed. I understand it's a pretty scary piece of equipment when in operation, lol. Now I swear I taped this in HD, but... There's a very good chance I didn't. So it's another NTSC video enhanced to HD. But it's still 480i... It was to be elevated, and would have the guests pass under it between Future World and World Showcase. But, as Dick Nunis pointed out, if they did that no one would ever go to the back of World Showcase, lol. So if you ever wonder why you have to cross the entire park to get there, he's to blame. (The rear exit to Crescent Lake did not yet exist.) Also unusual about the pavilion, is it's size. Most of the other country pavilions are two stories tall, but use forced perspective to make them appear to be three. American Adventure in reality is five stories tall, but made to look like three. Some of this is accomplished by having the American Gardens Theater blocking the lower half of the building from across World Showcase. During a D23 event, we had access to the Presidential Suite, one of the private backstage areas used during corporate events (or even weddings.)
