He escaped from a gulag in Siberia and travelled 8,700 miles over three years to return home

In the years following the Second World War, Clemens Forell, a German officer captured by Soviet forces in 1945, was sentenced to 25 years of hard labour in a remote gulag in eastern Siberia. After several years of imprisonment under extreme conditions, Forell decided to take a risk and make a calculated escape from the Soviet camp, an action that led him to travel more than 8,700 miles (14,000 kilometres) on foot through hostile terrain, from Siberia to Iran, to finally return to Germany at Christmas 1952. This story, based on real events and adapted in the German film ‘As Far as My Feet Will Carry Me’ (2001), directed by Hardy Martins, explores human determination in the face of adversity and the impact of Soviet systems of repression on prisoners of war. In this video, we will explore the journey of soldier Clemens Forell, from his internment in a Siberian gulag to his return to a divided post-war Germany. In addition, we will address the academic and popular discussions that, for decades, have attempted to discern between the historical elements and possible narrative licences in this story, offering a balanced perspective on its legacy in the context of the Second World War and the Cold War.
