What does being a minority in India mean? Being one of the biggest democracies in the world, India upholds the values of secularism and pluralism, and the Indian constitution encourages the prohibition on discrimination based on race, religion, caste, sex, or place of birth. However, this kind of cultural, religious, and social diversity results in a variety of intersectional discrimination for the minority communities. In the talk Vishwajeet explains how the concept of minorities is widespread in India leading to many intersectionalities. Vishwajeet Deshmukh is a lawyer and historian who graduated from Government Law College in Mumbai, India. He is currently a law clerk with Justice G.S. Kulkarni at the Bombay High Court in Mumbai, India. He worked as a Research Assistant with Dr. Uther Charlton-Stevens, and Dr Swati Chawla researching the history of minorities. He was awarded The Tata - 1947 Partition Archive Research Grant 2021 for his work on the 1947 partition of British India and its impact on minorities. He is the editor of the Journal of Intersectional Analysis, which was founded to promote "intersectionality" in India.
