Pol Pot, born Saloth Sar in 1925, was the leader of the Khmer Rouge who ruled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979 and orchestrated one of the deadliest genocides of the twentieth century. Driven by a radical vision of a classless agrarian society, he abolished cities, schools, religion, and family structures, forcing millions into harsh rural communes. His regime executed intellectuals, professionals, and suspected dissenters—often for something as simple as wearing glasses—while starvation, overwork, and disease claimed countless others. In just four years, nearly two million Cambodians perished. Overthrown by Vietnam in 1979, Pol Pot lived in hiding until his death in 1998, leaving behind a legacy of terror and destruction.
