Foraging Early Spring Wild Edibles: Ohio Midwest

Some people use calendars or journals to know when to look for certain wild edibles. I like to use nature itself, as the Native Americans once did many moons ago. The calls of the spring peeper tree frogs at my place lets me know that it’s time to start gathering some wild edible plants. Most wild edible plants are best when they are young & tender. These are just a few wild edible plants that are easy to identify & many are very commonly found in your backyard. All of these plants seen in this video were during the same day at my home in the woodlands of Ohio. The pictures at the end of the video are just a few examples of these wild edibles from my home that I previously foraged & prepared. I do occasionally use wild edibles in a somewhat fancy gourmet style meal however, I am a primitive skill practitioner so I often keep it simple. Please make sure that you always use respect & harvest responsibly! I never gather a species of plant unless it is abundant within that area, otherwise I let them be. Also, never eat any wild plants unless you are absolutely certain about its identification. There are plants out there that can & will do you harm. There are many books available to help. Peterson’s field guides are very useful. Keep getting outdoors into the wild & respectfully enjoy what nature has to offer.
