YEEP in three years (201-2023) 1. In February 2023, the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR) published that Rwandans are 13,246,394. Among those millions of people, youth aged between 16 to 30 years are 8,649,896 which makes 65.3 percent of all Rwandans. 2. As I start with numbers, you may think it’s norma, but here comes the particularity. Underline it in red, and you will understand the story I’m about to tell you: 3. Of the 8,650,896 Rwandan youth, aged between 16 to 30 years, around 2,569,019 are unemployed. They don’t earn any income. Daily, or monthly as you and I. This is a big challenge, you can understand. 4. This huge number of unemployed Rwandan youth was published in early 2022, while towards the end of 2021 the Organisation founded by Rwandan Graduates Genocide Survivors (GAERG), had conducted research on the issue of unemployment in the youth survivors of the Genocide against Tutsi, and found that more than 32 000 university graduates and those who couldn’t complete their education levels had the same issue. After identifying the issue, GAERG thought of a durable way to help its members and initiated the Youth Economic Empowerment Project (YEEP) to help the youth finding jobs, earn money and develop themselves and the country as well. 5. GAERG’s YEEP project was well designed to empower the youth with knowledge that will help them earn incomes for long time. 6. In more than three years that YEEP has been supporting the young Genocide survivors, it’s now operating in Gasabo, Kicukiro and Nyarugenge in City of Kigali, Kayonza, Bugesera and Rwamagana in Eastern Province, and Kamonyi, Muhanga, Nyanza and Huye in Southern province. 7. Allow me to take GAERG cameras to the youth empowered through YEEP, to share with us their excitements. 8. This satisfaction, their potential and self confidence in being wealthy matches perfectly with GAERG partners expectations in this YEEP project. 9. YEEP has transformed the lives of many youth survivors of the Genocide who were jobless. That’s great news. But there is still a long journey ahead because among the 32 000 targeted, only 3 200, or only 10 percent were empowered. GAERG and its partners think that the quickest solution should be to bring more partners on board, to be able to reach the remaining. 10. It is true that more partners are needed but also, the empowered youth, as they continue to develop, they will look back, and help their colleagues. For them to reach that level, they still need their elders advice to accompany them and make them successful 11. GAERG is grateful. We are grateful to our partners in general, particularly our partners in YEEP. 12. Unemployment in Rwanda is generally on 17.2 percent, but let me focus on another category, then you will understand the story I was telling in a while. 13. Unemployment in women is at 19.2 percent. Unemployment in men are 15.5 percent. And it increases in the youth category aged between 16 to 30 as it stands at 20.4 percent. Speaking of this percentage in youth, you will also think about the 32 000 youth survivors of the Genocide against Tutsis. On the unemployment that they share with many others adds the consequences of the Genocide against Tutsis that they face day by day. The consequences of the Genocide against the Tutsi are painful, and they survivors more as years pass by, and it get worse when it links with unemployment, and makes them unable to earn some money that would help them in their basic needs. It hurts a lot and it’s one of the main causes of the deterioration of the mental health of the 32 000 youth survivors of the Genocide against Tutsi living in unemployment. This is the right time to support them create jobs, earn money, develop themselves and the country in general.
