My name is Greg, I'm 21 and from the UK. Here is my entry for the Spitfire WestWorld Scoring Competition. If you want to know a bit more about the choices I made in composing this there is a short summary below. Hope you enjoy! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My approach with this piece was to enhance the story to the best of my ability and echo the events on screen. The existing music choice made it clear to me that the genre change was key. I tried my best to capture the same exaggerated, almost out of body experience. In addressing this, there was a fine line between demonstrating the heightened emotions he was undergoing, and approaching anything obvious and gimmicky for the sake of overplaying the genre change. This was my best attempt to fit the picture and not sound out of place. The initial inspiration of the piece was the idea that after the genre change, the chasing of the cars would be portrayed by the drums and bass now playing in a galloping rhythm to fit with the horseback chases of previous seasons. Throughout the piece, I used a bending crescendo horn as a way to represent danger, whether it's when we see an enemy or being thrown around in the car. I wanted to the soundtrack of the in-car scenes to portray the sense of flying and airy-ness with lush strings and cello lines. I think it also acts a contrast the (relative) safety of being inside there car, to the danger of shooting from the sunroof. When the car emerges from the flames after the missed explosion, the expression on Caleb's face was one of horror. I used distressing fluttertongue horns and atonal brass to represent the worst and thing Caleb could see in his heightened state. The final part was the large string section playing to look of relief on Caleb's face as the scene ends. Thanks for taking the time to read, and I hope you enjoyed the music! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Website: https://gregstuckey.com/ SoundCloud link: / spitfire-westworld Instagram: / gregstuckey #westworldscoringcompetition2020 #HBO
