How To Avoid Undercutting when making Ikonart Stencils

In this video we’re talking about undercutting—what it is, how it happens, and how to prevent it when making your stencils. Undercutting occurs during the exposure process when light sneaks under the edges of your artwork, causing your final stencil to turn out slightly smaller than your original design. While this usually isn’t noticeable with thick fonts or bold areas, it can cause thin lines, small fonts, distressed designs, or fine details to disappear entirely during washout. To avoid undercutting, start by making sure your artwork prints nice and dark—this is especially important for high-detail designs. Next, create a strong seal between your artwork and stencil film by using the clear cover sheet included in every Ikonart stencil pack. Lay your stencil film down, place your artwork on top, then cover with the clear sheet and rub it down well. This seal is crucial, especially if your artwork has a curl and doesn’t lay completely flat. You can also mirror your artwork before printing so the printed side touches the stencil film directly, creating even better contact during exposure.
