In the spring and summer of 2026, Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" 4014 embarked on is most ambitious tour to date - a coast to coast journey across the United States to celebrate 250 years of American independence. The trip began on March 29, as the Big Boy set out Westward on the Overland Route from the steam shop in Cheyenne, tackled Sherman Hill, then raced across the high plains to Rawlins, on the edge of the Red Desert. This first day covered familiar territory for the 4014, as the Big Boys spent almost the entirety of their careers hauling heavy freights on this route between Ogden and Cheyenne, and the engine has travelled this way four times since being restored to operation in 2019. In addition to a striking set of matching armour yellow passenger cars from UP's heritage fleet, 4014 is accompanied by UP 1616 honoring President Abraham Lincoln, who lead the nation through the Civil War and who signed the Pacific Railway Act which led to the creation of the Union Pacific, and UP 1776, a lazy excuse for a commemorative unit which consists of the America 250 logo slapped on an otherwise standard yellow diesel. We end the video with a look at an Eastbound freight train climbing over Sherman Hill at Hermosa.
