New Officer Mode is how you create CAWs in SW1. Unfortunately you can't just make a new one, you have to go through this entire mode that will take around 30-40 minutes unless you just try to Rest every month or something. Basically how it works is that you pick a model (you can only customize the name) and then you have 12 months to raise up your character. During these months you do training mini-games, 1 training = 1 month. You can choose between Sword, Spear, and Naginata for your movesets and switch freely, but you'll only build up stats in the one you use and can only use one when your character is officially made so you really just want to use one weapon over and over again. Depending on the training you do, other stats will raise. Also, each model has different stats they get a starting bonus into, so some models lean towards certain weapons. But so long as you focus on one weapon and get good grades on the trainings, you'll get enough stats for whatever weapon you pick regardless of model. The mode also has many secret events, some trigger randomly while some trigger when you gain a certain amount of stats and attempt a training. These events will have you fight Musou officers, and usually reward a skill. But sometimes they give something more unique, like defeating Hanzo for having a high Jump stat will unlock the War Rations item for use in the main game. Fights against Musou officers are hard and the weapon you use is randomized, so you have a 2/3 chance of getting weapon you have base stats in which will make it where you can get taken down in a single combo, if not a few stray hits. There's a Strike Ninja boss fight that is especially hard, he'll kill you in one hit if you get a weapon you aren't good in. Now the main thing that makes this mode not very fun is that the training mini-games are pretty terrible. Melee is one of the better ones, but it's hard to get a high score because of strict time and certain groups taking too long to kill, like tanky Strike Ninjas or Archer/Musketeers that shoot from far away which just drain your time. Some are outright atrocious like Archery, because aiming in this game is just bad, you can't hit anything if it's moving. Deflect has you deflect arrows back but you're just going to get shot up and killed trying to do that, let alone do it flawlessly for a good score. The best thing you can do is pick Riding over and over again, since it raises all stats and you get good stats from it if you get a high grade. Most importantly, it's easy to get a high grade in it, it's just riding a horse around a lap 2 times. It's even pretty lenient on the time, unlike most other trainings. The problem with this however, is that it just gets boring as it's the longest training to complete and after doing it 10 times in a row you're going to be sick of it. Even more so if you are trying to make multiple characters and end up playing it something more like 40 times in a row. After the 12 months you'll be asked which clan you want to join, and have different pairs of trainings to pass to succeed. Failure means your character doesn't get made and you just wasted a boatload of time. This doesn't affect anything and there's not even any unique dialogue from it, so just pick Takeda every time because they have Riding and Burst as their trainings, the two easiest ones to complete. You have to get 100 points total to pass, which isn't too hard to do. Then your weapon is decided based on...well it's either your highest stats or just what you used last, I'm not actually sure the deciding factor. There's something like 12 models you can choose from but 4 have to be unlocked by the aforementioned Strike Ninja fight. I don't show it here, but you have to gain a total of 90 points into one weapon's stat, then he challenges you (it's still random what weapon you use so good luck if you didn't get the one you trained with lol) and then he has a multi-phase fight where he keeps reviving himself and gets stronger/summons stronger allies. It very much sucks and the only way to win is to defeat him with a True Musou, which you can do at the start and skip all of his phases, but the game doesn't tell you that until much later in the fight, which you'll be lucky to even see when one hit from the fat bastard will mean your death. But defeat him 4 times and you get a male/female variants of an armored samurai and monk model. I'll show off those models when we play the New Officer's story, since I haven't seen them shown off much online as they are a massive pain in the ass to unlock, not to mention then having to complete New Officer Mode all over again just to "create" the new character to actually use them.
