New observations from NASA’s SPHEREx mission reveal that 3I/ATLAS is not behaving as a single, uniform environment. By separating dust, water, organic compounds, and carbon dioxide into distinct maps, SPHEREx shows that each material is distributed differently — and those differences matter. Some components spread outward quickly. Others remain tightly confined. And a few appear in localized, uneven pockets. Taken together, these images point to layered activity rather than one process acting everywhere at once. In this video, we break down each panel step by step, explain what these distributions mean physically, and explore how this layered structure helps explain the recent brightening of 3I/ATLAS. 🔐 Privacy note: An affiliate link is shared at the bottom of the description. 📌 Topics covered in this video NASA SPHEREx observations of 3I/ATLAS Dust behavior and radiation pressure effects Water vapor concentration near the central region Patchy and localized organic compound emission Carbon dioxide as a tracer of tightly anchored activity Why different materials form different spatial structures What a “layered environment” actually means How this structure relates to the observed brightening 📚 Sources NASA SPHEREx mission science blog (Feb 2026) NASA Photojournal: SPHEREx examination of 3I/ATLAS’s surrounding environment SPHEREx infrared compositional mapping releases NASA mission press materials and associated research ⚠️ Disclaimer This video is created for educational and informational purposes.
