My mother-in-law gave me this fur coat, which she bought about 50 years ago in Santa Barbara. I probably would never buy a fur coat for myself, but I truly believe it’s far better to preserve an existing piece—to improve the fit, refine the construction, and extend its life—rather than sell it or give it away. The quality of this fur is absolutely superb. That said, the coat had several fit and construction issues. The first thing I noticed was how much it opened at the front. When I tried to close it, the fronts would actually “scissor.” This is a common fitting problem, and I’ve shared a detailed correction video on my Patreon page for those interested in the technical side of that fix. The next major issue was the lining. It didn’t follow the shape of the coat at all. The lining had been replaced years ago at a small shop in Wyoming, but it wasn’t drafted to match the garment’s structure. That gave me the perfect reason to remove it completely, wash the original lining fabric, and remake an entirely new lining with the correct shape. Now the lining fits beautifully. I also added a silk insulating layer for warmth and longevity. My hope is that one day—if she wants it—this coat can be passed down to my granddaughter: a piece with a story, beautifully made, well-fitted, and thoughtfully cared for. #sewing #patternmaking #redesign #upcycling #furcoats Music: Local Elevator by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...
