In CEPR Senior Fellow Guillaume Long's recent appearance on the Majority Report, he reflects on the state of Honduras 12 years after the 2009 U.S.-backed coup against President Manuel Zelaya. Long outlines how the overthrow of Zelaya ushered in an era of brutally repressive and corrupt regimes that instituted harsh neoliberal economic policies, leading to widespread human rights abuses, assassinations of activists, entrenched impunity for the elite, and the further impoverishment of the Honduran people. An effect of the U.S.-backed coup includes a massive surge of immigrants looking for the alleged "American dream."
