The story begins as a Norwegian helicopter chases a sled dog to the American outpost, U.S. Outpost 31. The Americans, including station leader Garry (Donald Moffat) and helicopter pilot R.J. MacReady (Kurt Russell), watch one Norwegian accidentally kill himself while Garry kills the other one in self-defense. The Americans take the dog in, unaware of the alien danger it poses. Biologist Blair (Wilford Brimley) and mechanic Childs (Keith David) are among the crew who begin investigating the incident, and soon realize the Norwegians' base has been destroyed. There, MacReady and Dr. Copper (Richard Dysart) discover a bizarre, charred humanoid corpse, which they bring back for further analysis. As paranoia spreads, the team discovers that the alien can perfectly imitate any lifeform it assimilates. The creature reveals itself when the seemingly normal sled dog mutates in the kennel, attacking other dogs. Clark (Richard Masur), the dog handler, and the rest of the team manage to kill the creature, but Blair's autopsy reveals its terrifying nature. Blair, realizing the global threat the alien poses, sabotages the team's helicopter and radio to prevent anyone from leaving. The team becomes fractured as trust erodes, and tensions escalate when Bennings (Peter Maloney) is partially assimilated and must be incinerated. Suspicion falls on various crew members, including Garry, after the group's blood supply is sabotaged, preventing a test for infection. MacReady takes charge, devising a new blood test where heated wire is used to reveal infection. This iconic scene exposes Palmer (David Clennon) as one of the infected, leading to a violent confrontation where MacReady incinerates him. The remaining survivors discover Blair has been assimilated and is building a spaceship to escape. In the final act, MacReady, Childs, and Nauls (T.K. Carter) destroy the station to prevent the alien’s escape, resulting in a climactic explosion. Only MacReady and Childs survive, sitting among the burning ruins. Unsure if either is infected, they share an uneasy truce as the film ends with their fates ambiguous.
