Adventure is a buzzword these days, and Suzuki is keen to position its 2018 V-Strom 1000 more squarely in that genre, knowing that it already holds a place dear to the heart of many an on-road tourer. With that in mind, we were invited to ride the latest offering in one of southern California’s go-to locations for both of these kinds of exploits: the Lake Arrowhead region of the San Bernardino Mountains. The 2018 Suzuki All-New V Strom 1000XT Adventure FirstLook “In the past, the V-Strom 1000 has been perceived as a pavement motorcycle with some adventure styling, but the bike is capable of adventure-style touring,” says Avery Innis, Senior Product Marketing Specialist at Suzuki. Curious, then, our test bikes were fitted with street-leaning Bridgestones, and fewer than three miles of our test ride loop around Big Bear Lake placing the rubber off the road. We sampled the new 1000 and its little brother, the 650, back to back. The two compare in very expected ways. The big bike is taller, wider, and more powerful to the degree that one would expect. More fun on the road, and scarier off it. With the offered Bridgestone BW-501 radials fitted, a stretch of deep sand on a smooth fire road can dip the adventure meter needle into the red, even when free of the additional weight of everything you’d take with you on your off-road odyssey. On pavement, though, the V-Strom 1000 is a delight. Comfortable and agile, with torque and power to spare. Riding position is ideal for my 6-foot-2 frame, and I’d expect 500-mile days to be nearly effortless. The re-designed height-adjustable windscreen does a fine job of slicing through the air with very minimal buffeting.cycleworld
