Excessive body weight stemming directly from improper dietary habits precipitates a variety of degenerative diseases culminating in adverse health consequences for billions of people worldwide. Approximately 1/3 of Americans are obese with another 1/3 belonging in the overweight category. No wonder there’s an explosion of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, obstructive sleep apnea, fatty liver and cirrhosis to list but a few. OSA represents partial or complete obstruction of the upper airway associated with snoring, gasping, choking, flailing of the arms and awakenings. Interestingly the affected individual remains blissfully unaware of all of these nocturnal misadventures unless informed by the frequently aroused bed partner. In severe cases episodes occur more than every 2 minutes while in moderate OSA the frequency is between 2-4 minutes. While the awakenings last briefly often no more than a second or two, they disrupt normal nighttime restorative sleep. This leads to excessive daytime sleepiness, the typical complaint that draws people to doctors. Most individuals with OSA far exceed healthy weight guidelines. After an expensive night or two in a sleep laboratory, treatment often dictates use of CPAP – a machine that assists in keeping the air passageways open. For those more severely affected a BiPAP machine might be prescribed. Surprisingly an oral appliance might provide relatively similar clinical benefits. Some opt for weight reduction surgery while in others procedures to widen the upper airways are undertaken. Appropriate diet and weight loss would more simply remedy the problem, improve overall health and reduce the likelihood of obesity related heart disease and cancer.
