(18 Feb 1999) Natural Sound Heavy flooding in Bolivia has left scores of people stranded in the cities of Cochabamba and Santa Cruz. Overflowing rivers and mud have blocked a 150 (m) million dollar road that connects the cities, and residents have been forced to walk for miles to reach their destinations. At least three people have been reported missing. Several days of heavy rains have taken their toll in the Bolivian region of Chapare. Thousands of people have been stranded on this road which connects the cities of Cochabamba and Santa Cruz. Flood waters and mudslides have blocked the road for the last few days, leaving public buses and trucks stranded on both sides. At least 15-hundred vehicles have been stranded in the last two days. Nearby residents have been forced to walk for miles to reach their destinations. Several accidents have been reported due to poor visibility and at least three people have been reported missing. Witnesses say they were dragged away by the river's current. The floods have caused significant damage to the 150 (m) million dollar road which connects Cochabamba and Santa Cruz. Experts estimate 50 (m) million dollars in damages. The army and some volunteers have been drafted in to help in the clean up, but the road is expected to be closed for at least a week.
