Hello and Welcome to ALW Exploration. Today we are at Permanite Asphalt, based in Cawder Quarry, Matlock, It is an abandoned bitumen and mineral drying plant which last submitted Trading Accounts in 2013. The company is currently listed as dormant. Permanite Asphalt Ltd operated a mineral dryer, regulated under section 3.5 of the Environmental Permitting Regulations, at this large site. Our research has found that this site was Previously owned and operated by the well-known TarMac Company. The trading name was changed twice in 1993 which we believe was due to ongoing legal and environmental disputes. This was partly because of dangerous mineral dust being exhausted from a hopper system during manufacturing processes. The environmental agency stated that mineral dryer remains at the site of the Permanite installation and is not relocated to alternative sites. Cold aggregate was fed from stockpiles, by loading shovel, into the feed hopper. The aggregate was then agitated in the dryer drum and heated by a flame produced by a gas oil fired burner. Products of combustion and dust laden air from the drum were extracted and filtered by a bag filter dust arrestment plant and discharged via a 5.3 m high stack. The hot aggregate was elevated from the drum and weighed prior to discharge into mobile asphalt mixer lorries for delivery. Emissions testing was undertaken annually for particulates to demonstrate compliance with the 50 mg/m3 limit. The installation also operated a tar and bitumen process.
