Dr Rajasekhar Reddy K, Neuro & Spine Surgeon, Continental Hospitals, shares how to handle head injuries. The first concern that any patient has in case of a head injury is bleeding. The scalp tends to bleed heavily when compared to other parts of the body. Apply firm pressure on the edges of the wound to stop the bleeding. The pressure should be applied for more than 5-7 mins. If the bleeding still continues, take a clean cloth to and apply pressure over the scalp. If the bleeding still persists, then you need to rush to the emergency for surgical support. Along with the bleeding, there could be swelling of the scalp as well. This means that there is bleeding inside the scalp. To reduce the swelling, you need to apply ice and pressure over the scalp wound to avoid the swelling to increase. Don't rub on the scalp wound as it will worsen the bleeding and pain. Along with the bleeding and swelling, if the patient is having persistent vomiting, altered sensorium, or any symptoms of a seizure, you have to take him/her to the nearest hospital where a neurosurgeon can examine the patient and get the necessary investigations like CT scan to check the condition of the brain. The treatment will depend on the result of these investigations.
