It is a constitutional monarchy that is made up of four separate countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. UK is a permanent member of the United Nations, the Commonwealth, NATO, the , and formerly the European Union. England and Wales unified in 1536. Scotland became part of British crown in 1602. Ireland became part of UNITED KINGDOM in 1801. The term "United Kingdom" became official in 1801 when the parliaments of Great Britain and Ireland each passed an Act of Union. At its peak in 19th century, the British empire covered one-fourth of the surface of earth. England is the biggest country, where most people in the UNITED KINGDOM live. People who live in England are called English. Scotland, north of England, is the second biggest country. People who live here are called Scottish, and a Scottish person may be called a Scot. Wales is to the west of England. Its people are called Welsh and they have their own Celtic language which is also called Welsh. Not everyone in Wales can speak Welsh, but almost everyone can speak English. Northern Ireland is the smallest country. Unlike the other three countries, it is not on the island of Great Britain: it is part of the island called Ireland. Northern Ireland takes up about a sixth of Ireland with the Republic of Ireland taking up the remainder. People who live in Northern Ireland are either Irish, British, or Northern Irish. The people who live there usually speak English. Present Queen of England is Elizabeth II. And the Prime Minister of United Kingdom is Boris Johnson. London is the biggest city in the UNITED KINGDOM and is the nation's capital city. Which is among world’s leading commercial, financial, and cultural centers. Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the striking clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster, the name is frequently extended to also refer to the clock and the clock tower. The official name of the tower in which Big Ben is located was originally the Clock Tower; it was renamed Elizabeth Tower in 2012 to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II, Queen of the United Kingdom. The Isle of wight is the largest island in UK. RED ROSE is the national flower of UK. Winder-mere is the largest lake of England. United Kingdom has a population of 66.65 million people. The United Kingdom has the world 5th largest economy with a Gross Domestic Product of 2.8 trillion USD. There have been great universities in Britain since the Middle Ages. The University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford, and London universities, collectively form the Golden Triangle of universities in the south-east of England. United Kingdom is a recognized nuclear state and is ranked sixth globally in military expenditure. In 2020, 40 billion pounds was spent on defense.
