Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye Price (in Canada) $35 ABV 45% "Nose" (undiluted) Cinnamon, rye bread, saw dust, faint burnt toast, damp wood, morning dampness in forest. "Palate" (undiluted) Initially spicy crusty rye bread notes grip the palate, a little young and a little raw ginger, that indicates the whiskies are young. (Note, once the bottle has been opened, after a couple days the oxidation positively affects the flavors by toning down the raw young whisky notes and replaces with brown sugar) "Finish" (undiluted) Ginger, oak, tingling winter mint, fine pepper. General Impressions Ok, decent, a tad mediocre. Nothing special here. I am baffled how Jim Murray can declare in his book, the Whiskey Bible that this is the best world whiskey scoring 97.5 out of a 100 points. In the Canadian whisky category, there is another rye whisky that is priced $5 cheaper and is far superior: Alberta Premium Dark Horse Alberta Premium Dark Horse Price (in Canada) $30 ABV 45% Age Statement None, but it is composed of 12 year old rye whiskey and 6 year old small pot rye whiskey. 8% dollop of aged corn whisky and actual sherry wine was also added to this blend. Aged in heavily charred American white oak barrels. "Nose" (undiluted) Nice sweet rye notes waft up, damp air, vanilla, charred oak. "Palate" (undiluted) Nice clean vanilla, cinnamon, mountain creek water, molasses, dry fig, a wee black and red licorice do an interesting call and response. Dark English fruit cake. "Finish" (undiluted) Pine needles, fig, dark chocolate mint. Conclusion Alberta Premium Dark Horse is cheaper and far superior to Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye. If you want a great Canadian whisky with complexity under $100, then please consider: Canadian Club 20 yrs Wiser's Legacy Gibson's Finest Rare 18 Mastersons 10 year Rye Whisky Cheers! Jason Debly http://jason-scotchreviews.blogspot.c... Editorial Note: I mistakenly stated that Jim Murray awarded Sullivan's Cove whisky was best in the world in 2014. He actually stated it was the best of the Southern Hemisphere in 2013. Another awards group, the Wold Whiskies Awards in 2014 stated that the Sullivans Cove French Oak Cask was the best in the world, beating out all competitors. So, I guess, I quarrel with these guys too. Sorry for the error!
