Join our family for a coastal adventure on Banks Peninsula, New Zealand. Chasing tide pool pāua, crabs, starfish and big views along a winding road near Akaroa. We start with one of our favourite drives out of Christchurch, following that ribbon of road along the hills before dropping down to a tucked-away corner of the coast. From there it’s sketchy rope paths, cold water, and exploring the rocks with the kids as we hunt for pāua (aka Abalone) in the tide pools. We talk about respectful collecting, leaving the little ones, only taking what we’ll eat for dinner, and being gentle with anything we move. Back home, Bear (Malaya) takes over at the pan and we cook up a simple pāua feast while the girls share what they thought of the day. If you’re planning your own trip: Check local tide times and shellfish advisories for the day you go Take only what you need, leave the small or uncertain pāua on the rock Watch your footing on wet rocks and “sketch path” descents Pack warm layers, The water is colder than it looks! We’re The Scenic Route: a Canadian family exploring New Zealand’s coasts, hills and hidden corners together. Thanks for coming along with us around Banks Peninsula… and until next time, Keep Exploring. 🌿 Chapters 00:00 Intro 00:22 The Drive 01:25 The Sketchy Path 03:03 The Beach 04:59 Slippery Rocks 05:45 Brad's frozen 06:40 Diving in! 07:05 Paua spotted 08:21 Chiton & Starfish: Angelina's tide pool discoveries 09:15 More Paua 10:30 Starfish 11:03 The drive home 12:28 Paua Cook
