Blasting and chainswording my way through the first three levels of Warhammer 40K: Boltgun, an oldschool first-person shooter in which you play as a Space Marine battling Chaos Space Marines and Daemons. Featuring a striking visual style reminiscent of Prodeus (with sprite-based characters set in dynamically-lit 3D environments), Boltgun is fast, furious, and magnificently violent. The star of the show ironically isn't the Boltgun itself, but rather the Chainsword. Since you can use it to home in on enemies from afar, it effectively doubles as a makeshift grappling hook. See an enemy up on a ledge? Target him with your Chainsword to saw him up AND reach higher ground! Although I totally dig the game's theme and carnage, it unfortunately suffers from a myriad of issues that keep it from reaching its full potential. Damage feedback is abysmal, for example. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've been near death without realizing it. The level designs also tend to be sloppy and confusing, with strange layouts, questionable enemy placement, and an absurd amount of ammunition littered all throughout them (at this rate, why not just give us infinite ammo?). And don't even get me started on how wildly inconsistent the difficulty tends to be. Warhammer 40K: Boltgun isn't a bad game, it's just a very flawed one. Despite its flaws, there's still lots of fun to be had. And you just can't beat the Chainsword, which is quite possibly the coolest, most satisfying chainsaw I've ever used in a shooter. If you'd like to play it for yourself, it's now available on Steam via the following link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/20... It's also on all of the major consoles, including the Nintendo Switch!
