We have been so excited to share this week’s performance with our YouTube subscribers! Please enjoy Zigeunerweisen by Sarasate, performed by Open Door friend and Grammy-winning artist, Ilmar Gavilan. Violinist, Ilmar Gavilan is a native of Havana, Cuba and has had a remarkable performing career. His journey has taken him all over the world and ranges from performing for world leaders at The White House to Queen Sophia at the Royal Palace of Madrid in Spain. Ilmar Gavilan has performed with top stature artists of diverse styles, including Itzhak Perlman and Chick Corea. Pablo de Sarasate wrote Zigeunerweisen, or Gypsy Airs, Aires Gitanos, in 1878 for violin/orchestra performances. A Spanish gypsy, also referred to as a Gitano, was stereotyped for his/her negative socio-economic status- referring to the lowest strata of society. Gypsies were often unfairly linked to crime, abuse and marginality. As Latino immigrants living in the United States, our students can identify with living in the margins. However, because our programs and supporters continuously shed light on our students’ inherent worth and potential, our students are positioned for meaningful roles within our society. It’s incredible when we see the heart of The Open Door expressed through such a beautiful piece like Zigeunerweisen! Check out Ilmar's performance on our YouTube channel:
