The town of La Seyne-sur-Mer has long been associated with the shipbuilding industry. But in recent years the town has moved from the shipbuilding industry to tourism. Parc De La Navale was built on the site of former shipyards. The docks previously used have had extensive work and now comprise a park, marinas and a new (2010) hotel overlooking the marinas. Pont Levant is a former bascule (lift) bridge and served originally as a railway bridge, dates back to 1917 and was built by the same company which built the Eiffel Tower. In 1989, the relocation of shipbuilding led to the closure of shipyards. The bridge has been completely renovated and stabilized in an upright position and was opened to the public. It has been equipped with an elevator that allows visitors to reach the top of the bridge from where there are great views across the harbor. Pointus, (meaning - pointed ) also called the barquette marseillaise are the traditional, colorful and timeless fishing boats of the Provencal coast. Sanary-sur-Mer is located in coastal Provence, France on the Mediterranean Sea, 8 miles west of Toulon. The seafront location was first established as a fishing village clustered around the medieval watchtower, under the protection of "Sanct Nazari" of Lérins Abbey. The port was constructed and the harbor deepened in the mid-16th century. The little fishing port known later as Sant Nàri, contracted later on as Sanàri, was given the formal status and distinguished as "sur-Mer" ("on Sea") on 27 July 1923. Sanary-sur-Mer's coastline has a number of small beaches. Jacques Cousteau, French naval officer, oceanographer, filmmaker and author, had a house in Sanary, the Villa Baobab. Jacques, together with French writers Frederic Dumas, and Philippe Tailliez, who all had a passion for diving, invented and developed the diving regulator (aqua lung) with the aid of engineer Emile Gagnan. In 1890, Marius Michel Pacha, the Mayor of Sanary sur Mer donated the new Saint-Nazaire church to replace the 16th century Provençal church. The church is decorated with frescoes, the work of the artist Jean-Baptiste Garrigou, a renowned iconographer. The Fountain of Agriculture, constructed under the mandate of Michel Pacha, was built by the Marseille sculptor Aldebert. The fortified Tower of Sanary, was built around 1300. The tower is 21 metres high and 8 metres wide. The Tower was restored by the municipality and opened to the public in 1990. Inside the tower are collections of underwater archaeology. The terrace offers a breathtaking view of the town of Sanary, which has developed while preserving its authenticity and character to become one of the most beautiful fishing ports in France. The alleys of Sanary, dedicated entirely to pedestrians, are a testament of Provencal architecture untouched by time. They are located in the heart of the village and extend along the picturesque fishing port. The Fountain of the Marine was constructed under the mandate of Michel Pacha, built by the Marseille sculptor Aldebert. The markets of Sanary Sur Mer are located at the heart of the village and around the fishing port. Several markets with very distinct characteristics are laid out for everyone explore. The flower market offers an array locally grown plants, bouquets and cut flowers. The fish market offers a variety of the day’s catch. There are fresh produce, meat and deli markets as well.
