In this video we visit Richmond, a major station on Melbourne's rail network in the inner south east that serves as the junction where the Alamein, Belgrave, Glen Waverley, and Lilydale lines split from the Frankston and Sandringham lines. It's also an interchange point between direct Flinders Street services and City Loop services. It's also a busy station during sporting events due to its close proximity with the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the Melbourne Park sporting precinct. Richmond is also served by V/Line Gippsland Line services and until the 1st February 2026 was also served by trains on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines. We visit the station on two occasions in March 2025 while Steamrail Victoria were operating two steam shuttles through the station; the first being the Moomba Festival shuttles between Flinders Street and Glen Huntly with A2 986 & K183 on the 9th March 2025, and then the Union shuttles between Flinders Street and Union on the 29th March 2025 with K153 & K190. Along with the steam trains we see the usual variety of Metro Trains, with plenty of Comeng, Siemens, X'trapolis, and High Capacity Metro Trains seen, plus a V/Line Vlocity heading to Traralgon. Richmond station opened as Punt Road on the 8th February 1859. It was renamed to Richmond on the 1st January 1867. The station has been rebuilt multiple times over its life. The current 10-platform station opened on the 26th March 1960 during the Project Phoenix era, which replaced the the old six-platform station which had been built in 1885 (which imo reminded me of the northern (historic) part of North Melbourne station; having been built around the same time in a similar style). The station received a minor upgrade in 2015 which saw new shelters built over the platforms and ramps on the MCG side, making it one of the few stations in Melbourne to have 100% canopy cover on the platforms.
