Hundreds of Muslim families, who fled as the Hindu rioters set fire to their homes, are living in temporary camps set up in schools and community buildings. Most of them say it isn't safe to return to their homes, even in Ahmadabad, where soldiers have enforced a tense status quo. 0003 In the Indian state of Gujarat, this school has been turned into a camp for displaced Muslims. 0009 These Muslim families are too afraid to return to their homes after fleeing from Hindu rioters. 0015 Week-long clashes between Muslims and Hindus have left more than 500 people dead and many more homeless after their houses were looted and torched. 0024 (SOUNDBITE: (Hindi) Mehrunissa Sheikh, Displaced Muslim woman) 0027 "We won't go back," this woman says. "We used to share meals with our neighbours and sit together as friends, but all of them joined the mob." 0036 (SOUNDBITE: (Hindi) Waziran Bibi, Displaced Muslim woman) 0039 "We would rather beg than go back," this woman says. Our hearts are broken and we fear for the safety of our children." 0048 Sixty-five Muslims were killed when a Hindu mob set fire to 24 houses in this Muslim neighbourhood. 0054 A Hindu flag now flies from the top of the burnt-out mosque. 0058 There's now an uneasy divide between the two communities. 0102 (SOUNDBITE: (Hindi) Rajesh Rathod, Hindu resident) 0104 "I think it's better if the Muslims don't come back," this Hindu man says. 0109 Hindu-Muslim animosity has been fueled by Hindu nationalist plans to build a temple on the site of a mosque, which was destroyed by a Hindu mob in 1992. 0119 When plans to start building on the site were revealed, Muslims set fire to a train carrying Hindu nationalists, killing 58 people. 0127 The deaths provoked a retaliatory rampage by Hindus and the worst religious violence in India since 1993.
