Completed on March 2, 1786, this concerto, along with the one in D minor, is among the most frequently performed. Though it appears cheerful, its underlying character is strangely melancholic. There is no violent passion or dramatic effects, and the orchestration is in perfect harmony with its moving nature. None of Mozart’s other great piano concertos employ such a modest orchestra: This one includes no trumpets, no timpani, and no oboes, but the clarinet plays a predominant role. It is also the least virtuosic of the composer’s major piano concertos. I. Allegro "Nowhere else in his [Mozart’s] work is there a first movement that displays such structural simplicity, such irregularity in the thematic relationship between the tutti and the solo; where thematic invention is so crystal-clear, even when it ventures into counterpoint or rhythmic peculiarities. The key of A major, in Mozart’s hands, has the richness of colors, the transparency of stained glass... It is no coincidence that trumpets and timpani are absent. What is present, however, are dark nuances and veiled accents of passion, which escape the casual listener." — Alfred Einstein II. Adagio (F-sharp minor) In this movement, the piano alternates with the woodwinds. "Melancholy…" wrote C.M. Girdlestone, "now takes hold of the orchestra and permeates the entire movement… With the first notes of this ‘sad dance’ in F-sharp minor—a key Mozart used in no other work—the superficial charm disappears, and the ‘dark demon’ reigns supreme." III. Rondo A great number of melodies burst forth in this movement, which is one of Mozart’s most brilliant rondos; the tempo remains steady from beginning to end. In the 1950s, Hungarian pianist Géza Anda decided to dedicate himself particularly to Mozart. He was the first to record the complete Piano Concertos, conducting from the keyboard with the Camerata Academica of the Salzburg Mozarteum between 1961 and 1970. His modern interpretation of these works—measured, engaging, yet with a luminous style free of gratuitous virtuosity—would pave the way for other pianists in the years to come.
