With support from the Norwegian Red Cross, the Kenya Red Cross is implementing a cash for health project in Marsabit (3 Wards) and Garissa ( 2 Wards) aimed at improving drought - affected communities' health through cash and voucher assistance (CVA). Due to repeated failed raining seasons, food and water are becoming scarce resources, resulting in increased expenses, competition over resources, negative coping mechanisms and worsened health and nutritional status for the population. Increased rate of disease outbreaks, poorer nutrition and access to clean drinking water have led to an alarming situation for mothers, children and elderly population in drought affected areas. There is a rapid increase in water born diarrhoea cholera, and respiratory diseases as well as increased pregnant and lactating women have very low rates of up-taking health services in drought affected areas due to access (transportation), cultural and financial barriers (cash).
