In the eighth message of our series through the Gospel of John, Rev. Dr. George Payton turns to John 2:12–25 and Jesus’ first cleansing of the temple — a powerful moment that reveals His authority, His identity, and His deep zeal for His Father’s House. As Jesus travels to Jerusalem for Passover, He finds the temple courts filled with buying, selling, and exploitation. What was meant to be a house of prayer had become a place of profit. In a dramatic display of righteous zeal, Jesus overturns tables, drives out the merchants, and declares, “My Father’s House” — making a bold statement about who He is and why He has come. This message explores the meaning of holy anger and what it meant for Jesus to identify Himself as the Son of God so early in His ministry. When He says, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up,” He points beyond the building to His own body — foreshadowing His death and resurrection and revealing that He Himself is the true meeting place between God and humanity. But this passage does more than tell us what happened then — it confronts us now. Because through Christ, we have become the temple of the Holy Spirit. The question is no longer only about respecting a building, but about honoring God with our lives. What tables might Jesus need to overturn in us? Where has convenience replaced reverence? Have we allowed distraction to crowd out devotion? As we enter the Lenten season, this sermon calls us to examine our hearts, renew our focus, and live with wholehearted commitment to Christ. True belief is more than admiration for signs and wonders — it is trust that transforms our actions, our habits, and our priorities. Join us as we continue our journey through the Gospel of John — discovering a Savior who is consumed with zeal for His Father’s House and who invites us to live as temples marked by worship, holiness, and hope.
