Singapore can’t afford to be “passive bystander” amid global economic tensions: PM Lawrence Wong

"Singapore cannot afford to be a passive bystander in this evolving landscape", said Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on Singapore's position as a small open economy amid global economic tensions. At the 14th S Rajaratnam lecture on Wednesday (Apr 16), Mr Wong emphasised that "the Singapore brand is well-regarded and we enjoy a deep reservoir of international goodwill", and that the country will do more in these challenging times. He highlighted that Singapore will continue to focus on Southeast Asia, but also set sights further afield to Latin America, Africa, Middle East, the Pacific and the Caribbean, while expanding work in digital domains and renewable energy. He also pointed out that the world needs more collaboration and that “we must not retreat into protectionism”.
