Peerless Small Batch Barrel Proof Bourbon Review

Today we sample a brand that dates back to the 1880's...Peerless Small Batch Bourbon!!! Originally based in Henderson, KY. The distillery and the Peerless brand became a victim of Prohibition. In 2014, the Peerless brand was reborn in downtown Louisville and obtained the original Kentucky Distilled Spirits Plant Number (DSP-KY-50). Peerless Bourbon is made using a sweet mash process, so they don't use any mash from previous batches which can lead to slight variations in the fermentation. It’s barreled at 107 proof, aged at least four years and then blended in small batches, non-chill filtered, and bottled at barrel proof. The nose starts with the ethanol coming through but it opens up into tobacco and oak with vanilla sweetness. The palate really makes your mouth water...caramel, vanilla and cinnamon come through with a touch peanut. The finish stays relatively sweet with a nice oily note. With a small amount of water, the nose starts to show more tobacco and leather...especially the leather seemingly like it has more age to it. The palate doesn't change much but now it finishes with a nice hug through the chest. Their lineup is priced at a premium and while we feel like it's good whiskey it's not a great value!
