Anatomy of the Mouth

About this Video - Anatomy of the Mouth: Do you know the anatomy of the mouth? Are you trying to improve your pronunciation and struggle to know the different articulators? Well, in this video, that's exactly what I'm going to help you with. So, here's are the different articulators, your mouth anatomy, the articulatory system, Top and bottom lip, tongue (I'll talk more about that in a moment), jaw, but have you ever heard of the alveolar ridge (some call it the gum ridge) a good alveolar ridge definition is that it is the little bumpy ridge about half a centimetre behind the back of your top front teeth. If you take the tip of your tongue and stroke the area behind your top teeth and then slide it backwards slowly you should feel a little bumpy ridge, that your alveolar ridge, and in RP (a standard southern British English accent) we make a number of sounds with the tongue tip touching the alveolar ridge T D N L ad a few more, so it's a pretty important place of articulation. Back from the alveolar ridge it's the hard palate, the roof of the mouth and then there is also the soft palate, which we touch with the back of the tongue to make sounds like K and G and NG, so again pretty important. If we look more closely at the tongue anatomy, you'll see ha pow it can be divided into sections, which are used to articulate with different parts of the mouth to make different sounds: tongue tip is used for sounds like T and D and L and N, the blade is used for SH and ZH and dog and CH, the front for sounds like Y in Yellow and back of the tongue for K and G and NG.
