SCARLATTI - THE CANTABILE SONATAS (I). SANDRO IVO BARTOLI

During the research for my Scarlatti project, I came across a most interesting study by Rosalind Haldon titled "Domenico Scarlatti and his Cantabile Sonatas" (Musicology Australia, Vol. 25). Among other things in Ms. Haldon scholarly essay, I was intrigued by the article's suggestion that the Cantabile Sonatas of Domenico might contain the very first idiomatic "piano" style. Upon reflection, I ultimately agree. Thus, having at my disposal the entire collection of Sonatas in video format, I thought of presenting all of Domenico's Cantabile Sonatas next to eachother, following the Kirkpatrick numbering system and without regard for tonal compatibility. This is thus the first instalment of a three-video series which will contain all said Sonatas, with one or two proviso. In this collection, "Cantabile" refers to a style of playing rather than to a specific tempo indication. In other words, "Cantabile" is intended as "not brilliant/fast". Therefore, all the Sonatas marked "Andante", in full or in part, are included. In addition, several of the Sonatas presented here do not have a tempo indication in the original sources. When I recorded my series, I choose to play some of them at a moderate tempo and those are indeed included here. Needless to say, in such cases my decision is totaly arbitrary and based solely on matters of taste and stylistic compatibility. Others may disagree, of course. Buon ascolto! / Nel bel mezzo della ricerca per il mio progetto Scarlatti, mi imbattei in un interessante articolo di Rosalind Haldon intitolato "Domenico Scarlatti e le sue Sonate camtabili" (Musicology Australia, Vol. 25). Fra le altre cose notevoli di quell'importante studio, mi intrigò la più o meno velata allusione al fatto che le Sonate cantabili di Domenico fossero il primo esempio di scrittura espressamente "pianistica". Dopo lunga riflessione, sono implicitamente d'accordo con la Dottoressa Haldon. Avendo a disposizione tutte le Sonate in registrazioni video, ho pensato di presentare tutte le Sonate cantabili una accanto all'altra, seguendo la numerazione del catalogo Kirkpatrick e senza riguardo per la compatibilità tonale. Questo, dunque, è il primo di tre filmati che conterranno tutte le Sonate cantabili di Domenico, con un paio di precisazioni. In questa raccolta, "Cantabile" si riferisce più allo stile esecutivo che non ad una precisa indicazione di tempo. In altre parole, "cantabile" indica "non brillante/veloce". Di conseguenza, anche le Sonate marcate "Andante", in tutto o in parte, sono incluse. Inoltre, diverse Sonate non hanno indicazione di tempo nelle fonti. Quando incisi la mia serie, scelsi di eseguirne alcune a passo moderato e queste sono senz'altro incluse in questa raccolta. Ovviamente, in questi casi si è di fronte ad un mio arbitrio: ho motivato la mia scelta interpretativa secondo criteri di gusto e compatibilità stilistica, ma pur sempre di scelta si tratta.
