This took place at night after a few days of rain in my local San Gabriel Foothills in Southern California. Bears are a pretty common occurrence and living close by I see them where I live during Spring and Summer, but have only crossed paths with them a few times while hiking up in the Mountains. When I first heard this I wasn't quite sure what it was, but after doing research I discovered that Black Bears will strip bark from trees in order to get to the sap which is a food source. This is likely to happen in spring after they've lost weight in the winter months.
