San Marcos Tlacoyalco Popoloca 🌄 A Living Otomanguean Language

Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together. Special Thanks to Eduardo Antonio Muñoz Espinoza :) ¡Ndeu! Dinna ̱ Andy. ¿Kexreen riꞌi? Hello! My name is Andy. How are you? Let's talk about the San Marcos Tlacoyalco Popoloca language. Language: The San Marcos Tlacoyalco Popoloca language, also called Ngigua by its speakers, is a member of the Popolocan branch of the Otomanguean language family. It is primarily spoken in the town of San Marcos Tlacoyalco, Puebla, and in nearby communities such as San José Buenavista, Piedra Incada, Palo Verde, San Juan Sacabasco, San Martín Esperilla, Sopantle, and San Francisco Esperilla. Sometimes referred to as Northern Popoloca, this variety has around 30,000 speakers, with most concentrated in San Marcos. Despite a lack of formal teaching in schools, the language remains a stable, community-wide mother tongue and serves as an important marker of identity among the local population. People and Culture: The San Marcos Tlacoyalco Popoloca people live in a high, dry region of Puebla, where San Marcos sits at about 1,970 meters and the surrounding hamlets rise to around 2,450 meters. Traditionally, they raised sheep and wove textiles such as blankets, sarapes for men, and blue shawls with yellow edges for women, the latter dyed with kasa (a local parasitic vine, Cuscuta sp.). Another cultural item is the kakje (strength belt), sometimes combined with woven palm strips from nearby San Luis Temalacayuca, used to support the back during heavy work and still worn by dancers, elders, and women after childbirth. While many younger people wear modern clothing, these traditional crafts and garments remain symbols of heritage and identity, reflecting the community’s adaptation to its environment and its ongoing respect for ancestral practices. This video is created for educational, language awareness, and language preservation purposes. It aims to provide valuable insights and knowledge to viewers, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of different languages and their unique characteristics. By raising awareness about linguistic diversity, the video seeks to foster a greater respect and recognition for various languages, particularly those that are endangered or underrepresented. Additionally, it contributes to the preservation of languages by documenting and sharing linguistic knowledge, thus ensuring that these languages and their cultural heritage are not lost to future generations.
